Last night was the 80th annual Golden Globes, and I don’t know if people even knew that it happened. The award show received its lowest ever TV ratings.
The Golden Globes lately have felt like a bit of a joke, especially when they straight-up didn’t air them last year. But, there were some amazing stories to come out of this year’s show.
To start off, I want to talk about Jerrod Carmichael calling out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for only choosing him to be the host because he’s gay and black. Carmichael is the only African-American to EVER host the Golden Globes, and he wanted it to be known that he wasn’t picked because of his talent but because of the boxes he checked.
I was crying laughing listening to his monologue because it felt so true, especially in the context that the show has been struggling to get people to watch. While this is a huge point, I would like to highlight some of the awards that I believe people should know about
Jeremy Allen White – Best performance by an actor in a television series – Musical or Comedy (The Bear)
The Bear was one of the best surprises of 2022 and honestly one of the best shows of the year overall. This show follows a young prestigious chef who decides to take over his late brother’s sandwich shop in the south side of Chicago.
Jeremy Allen White was nothing short of phenomenal in his performance here and I want to see him get more recognition. People most know White as Lip from the hit show Shameless, and I thought he was one of the best actors on that show, too. I’m so happy The Bear and White got the love they deserved. If you haven’t seen it, it’s currently streaming on Hulu. I can’t wait for season two.
Angela Bassett – Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever)
Angela Bassett is the first actor or actress ever to win a Golden Globe for a performance in a Marvel movie (and I believe and super hero movie). Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was a great tribute to Chadwick Boseman and my god, Bassett’s performance was one of the most moving roles I’ve ever seen in an action movie.
Playing the struggling mom who just lost her son, is trying to keep her family together, AND is leading a country, must be daunting, but she fucking killed it. I hope Bassett gets an Oscar nomination for this role because it’s truly one of the best performances this year.
Ke Huy Quan – Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture (Everything Everywhere All at Once)
In my opinion, this is the second greatest comeback story we’ve ever seen in Hollywood (Brendan Fraser is the only one who beats him). After being in two BLOCKBUSTER movies as a child, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies, Ke Huy Quan was seeing no work in the film industry, so he left it.
He decided to pick up acting again once he saw Crazy Rich Asians, and he played a vital part in what I think is the best movie of the year, Everything Everywhere All at Once. Quan brought so much heart and love to this film; he just wants to see his family love each other again.
Also, the plot required him to play different versions of his character, and he nailed every single one. What makes this even better is to see the love he’s received and how genuinely happy he is to be back. I truly hope we see him more.
There are two other points I want to touch on before I shut the fuck up. One is Mike White booming back with The White Lotus. At the show, he called everyone out for not making his show, and watching him do that while accepting all his awards was fucking incredible. I truly think his season on Survivor changed his whole career; he paid homage by sprinkling Survivor fan-favorites around in cameos throughout White Lotus.
My second thing is that Better Call Saul has never won a Golden Globe. This show contains some of the best cinematography I have ever seen and an out-of-this-world cast but STILL hasn’t won anything. Golden Globes: fucking be better.
